Monolithic Church of St Jean
One of the village’s most fascinating attractions is the ancient Monolithic Church of St Jean (Église Monolithe). The underground church, located in the lower part of the village, was only rediscovered in the 1950s after being concealed by a massive rockfall. Often referred to as the troglodyte church, it is an awe-inspiring structure carved directly into the limestone rock. With an interior height reaching 20 metres, it holds the title of the tallest monolithic church in the world.
The history of the church is equally remarkable. Excavations began as early as the 5th century, during which a full-immersion baptismal font was meticulously carved into the floor. To the left of the font, 80 burial hollows can be found, each aligned with the head pointing towards Jerusalem. On the right, a grand stone reliquary once held a significant holy relic, though this treasure has since disappeared.
A narrow spiral staircase leads to the first floor, offering views of the church’s interior. From here, a passageway once connected the church to the nearby château perched above. Near the entrance, you’ll find another area containing ancient tombs uniquely oriented towards the reliquary rather than Jerusalem.
This magnificent site was an important stop for pilgrims travelling along the Camino de Santiago (Way of St James). Today, it remains open to visitors daily from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, with an entry fee of €8 for adults and €3 for children ages 8-12.
