Opened in 2009, the Angoulême Comic Book Museum holds the prestigious Musée de France designation, placing it in the same cultural league as iconic institutions like the Louvre and the Palace of Versailles. This accolade underscores its significance in preserving and showcasing the art of comics.
Celebrating the “Ninth Art”
In France and Belgium, comics are revered as Le Neuvième Art or the Ninth Art, a recognition of their unique artistic and cultural value. While they may not yet hold the same literary stature as works by authors such as Honoré de Balzac or Victor Hugo, comic artists are increasingly acknowledged for their creative brilliance.
Exhibitions
The museum’s exhibitions offer a fascinating exploration of comic book history and its global influence. A dedicated section of the museum, My Little Museum, ensures younger visitors can enjoy their time through interactive games, costumes, and comic-themed activities. This space is designed to spark curiosity and inspire a love for storytelling, with beanbags and reading corners adding a cosy touch.
Events and Activities
Beyond its exhibitions, the Angouleme Comic Book Museum hosts various events throughout the year, including workshops, seminars, and comic book fairs. These gatherings unite artists, writers, and fans, offering opportunities to engage with the comic book community and even try creating your own stories. During our visit, we were lucky to attend one of their special event days, with author signings, live music from The Crumble Club, and interactive activities for children in the permanent and temporary exhibition areas.
Museum Shop and Amenities
The museum shop features a selection of postcards, gifts, creative DIY projects, and a range of books, including some in English. While there is an on-site cafe, it was closed during our visit so we couldn’t sample its offerings.
The International Comics Festival
Angoulême is also home to the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée, Europe’s premier comic book festival. Held annually since 1974, at the end of January, the event attracts thousands of artists, writers, and fans from around the globe. The festival celebrates the best in comics while fostering collaboration and inspiration within the industry by featuring exhibitions, workshops, masterclasses, and award ceremonies.
