Nestled within the serene landscapes of La Jemaye-Ponteyraud lies a hidden treasure known as Lac Jemaye, or the Grand Étang de la Jemaye. Lake Jemaye is a man-made lake created in the 1980s and managed by the Conseil Départemental. It is a testament to the beauty and biodiversity of the Val de Dronne region in southwestern France. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a water sports fan, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Lac Jemaye offers something for everyone.

An Espace Naturel Sensible

Lac Jemaye isn’t just a great place to visit; it’s also recognised as an Espace Naturel Sensible, a designation highlighting its importance for conservation and recreation. Tucked away in the heart of the Double Forest, this protected area boasts diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife, making it a haven for biodiversity enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Family-Friendly Fun

One of Lac Jemaye’s highlights is its family-friendly atmosphere. Children can play in the children’s play area designed for 2 to 12-year-olds while parents relax at the picnic tables scattered throughout the park. There is plenty of space to play football or pétanque in the grassed areas around the park. There’s also a beach volleyball court.

Aquatic Adventures

From kayaking and paddleboarding to fishing and boating, the adventures that await on Lac Jemaye’s waters are endless. Swimming is supervised from mid-June to the end of August.

Culinary Delights and Relaxation

There are two snack bars serving food, drinks and ice cream. I have read that they are only open in June, but we went yesterday (April), and both were open. Alternatively, unwind at the designated picnic area, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature.

Exploring the Surrounding Area

While Lac Jemaye is undoubtedly the jewel of the Double Forest, nearby attractions such as Aubeterre sur Dronne and the Ferme du Parcot offer additional opportunities for exploration. If you are visiting on a Friday, you might want to explore Riberac market in the morning before heading to the lake. Whether you’re interested in historical landmarks, cultural experiences, or agritourism adventures, the Val de Dronne region has something for every traveller.

A Gem Worth Discovering

Lac Jemaye is more than just a picturesque lake; it’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, a sanctuary for wildlife, and a source of joy for visitors of all ages. With its pristine natural beauty, diverse recreational opportunities, and family-friendly amenities, it’s no wonder that Lac Jemaye is hailed as the “joyau de la Double.”
