Christmas markets are a delightful aspect of the holiday season, filled with twinkling lights, festive decorations, and a sense of community. One particular region that boasts charming Christmas markets is Dordogne, located in southwestern France. With its picturesque towns and villages, the Dordogne Valley transforms into a winter wonderland during Christmas time. Most villages hold smaller marchés de Noël over the festive period, with Christmas trees, a nativity scene and local businesses.

These are some of the best Christmas markets for locals and tourists to get into the spirit of Christmas.

Sarlat

One of the most popular Christmas markets in Dordogne takes place in the historic town of Sarlat-la-Canéda. Nestled in Perigord Noir amidst narrow cobblestone streets, this market emanates a magical atmosphere that enchants both locals and tourists alike. The Sarlat Christmas market usually starts in early December. This year, it starts on 7th December 2024 and concludes on 31st December, allowing visitors to indulge in the festive ambience for an entire month.

Make your way to Place de la Grande-Rigaudie and Place du 14 juillet, the central locations of the Sarlat Christmas market. Every year, a new country is selected to inspire the theme. With 70 chalets to choose from, you can find local produce, jewellery, clothing, and decorative items that make perfect gifts. For food enthusiasts, head to the gourmet square, also known as Place Bistronomique, where twelve chalets offer a chance to savour the gourmet delights of the Périgord region, vin chaud (mulled wine), hot chocolate and much more.

Grown-ups will enjoy smoothly gliding on the ice at the ice rink. Teens will adore the dance floor nights. The little ones get a chance to experience the “baby rink” and get creative at the media library’s workshops! Visit Father Christmas at his house next door to the Elfin toy factory.

Bergerac
