If you’re visiting the Bergerac region, Château de Tiregand in Creysse is an unmissable stop. Combining a rich winemaking heritage with family-friendly events, this estate offers something for everyone. Located near Sainte Alvère, it’s not just about wine—though their Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc are among the best red wines in the region. The château also provides a fascinating historical backdrop dating back to the 13th century, when it was founded by Edward Tiregand, son of Henry III Plantagenet and Lady Tyrgan. Though the original medieval castle is no longer standing, you can still see remnants like the moats that once surrounded it.
Historical Highlights
In the 16th century, during the Wars of Religion, the château played a role in local conflict, and legend has it that relics of Saint Front were briefly hidden here before being thrown into the Dordogne. In the 17th century, the estate changed hands and began to transform into its more modern appearance, with Jean de Belrieu de Virazeil building a new castle in place of the original. The 18th century saw significant architectural changes under Jean Charles d’Augeard, who converted parts of the castle into wine cellars.
During the French Revolution, the château faced destruction but was partially saved, though some of its structures were demolished for building materials. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the estate saw a revival, with the La Panouse family adding distinctive features like two pavilions displaying the family crest.
By the 20th century, the château had passed to the Saint-Exupéry family, and Madame François de Saint-Exupéry played a crucial role in restoring parts of the estate, including the moat walls and roofs. In 2022, the Guyot family took over the property, continuing its legacy of wine production and cultural heritage.

I went to Les Fantomes De Tiregand with my 9-year-old son and his 2 friends, and they loved going through the castle, working out clues before going to the next room.
