If you’re looking for an exciting February half-term activity near Dordogne, Aquascope at Futuroscope offers a warm, high-energy escape from winter weather. Blending immersive technology with classic water park fun, it’s quickly becoming one of the most talked-about family attractions in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
Here’s everything to know before planning your visit, especially if you’re travelling from Dordogne.
Where Is Aquascope?
Aquascope is part of the Futuroscope resort in Chasseneuil-du-Poitou, near Poitiers in the wider Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
For residents of Dordogne, whether you’re in Périgord Vert, Blanc, Pourpre or Noir, it’s typically around 1.5 to 2.5 hours by car, depending on your location. That makes it very manageable as a school holiday day trip without needing to travel as far as Bordeaux or Toulouse.
What Is Aquascope?
Aquascope is a 6,000m² immersive indoor water park designed to combine:
- Water attractions
- Digital projections and lighting
- Themed environments
- Large-scale slides
It isn’t a traditional municipal swimming complex. Instead, it reflects the futuristic identity of Futuroscope, using technology and sound to create a sensory experience around water.
Because it is fully indoor and temperature-controlled, Aquascope works particularly well during the February half-term, when outdoor plans can be affected by cold or rain.

What Can You Expect Inside?
Thrill Slides
There are eight major slides, ranging from family raft rides to more adrenaline-focused descents. Some incorporate immersive lighting effects and projection elements, making them feel more theatrical than standard water slides.
Wave Pool
A central wave pool creates a lively atmosphere and gives younger visitors space to enjoy the movement without committing to large slides.
Lazy River
For a calmer pace, the lazy river offers a relaxed float around part of the complex.
Immersive Water Cinema
One of the most distinctive features is the aquatic cinema concept, combining water effects with large-scale digital projection. It’s designed as a multi-sensory show element rather than a swim space.
Is Aquascope Good for February Half Term?
February half term can be unpredictable weather-wise in Dordogne. Aquascope offers:
- A fully indoor environment
- Warm water and controlled temperatures
- A structured half-day or full-day experience
- A change of scenery from rural landscapes
School holidays do mean higher visitor numbers, so booking in advance is advisable. Choosing earlier time slots can sometimes help avoid peak afternoon crowds.
Who Is Aquascope Best For?
Aquascope suits:
- Families with primary and secondary-age children
- Mixed-age groups wanting both thrill and relaxation
- Visitors combining it with a Futuroscope stay
- Dordogne residents seeking a modern, indoor attraction
It may feel more compact than some large European outdoor water parks, but its immersive design and atmosphere give it a distinctive character.
Planning Your Visit from Dordogne
If you’re travelling from Dordogne, consider:
- Checking drive time from your specific Périgord region
- Booking tickets online in advance
- Reviewing height and age requirements for certain slides
- Bringing towels and flip flops
- Looking at Futuroscope accommodation options, if you prefer an overnight stay.
For families based in North Dordogne, it’s a particularly convenient half-term option compared to coastal destinations.

Why It’s an Interesting Option for Dordogne Families
Life in Dordogne is rich in history, nature, and slow travel; castles, rivers, markets and woodland walks define much of our leisure time. Aquascope offers something completely different: a futuristic, immersive and energetic indoor experience.
For winter school holidays, that contrast can be refreshing.
Our personal experience
We went with 3 boys for their 11th birthday treat. They loved it.
We stayed at The Originals City, Hotel Alteora. It isn’t an official Futuroscope hotel, which makes it a lot cheaper, and you can walk to Aquascope from there, leaving your car in the free hotel car park. We booked for the night before we were due to go into the park.
We reserved a table at The Space Loop restaurant for a meal before going over to our hotel. At the hotel, we played board games in the bar area and played in the arcade room.
We booked a 10 am session at Aquascope and left at about 4.45pm. The boys loved the slides, the lazy river, and the cinema pool. There is a smaller kids’ area, but I am glad we didn’t take my younger daughter, as I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy the rest of the park with the boys, as she is below the height restrictions.
There is a snack bar within the park that you can use without needing to get changed; however, we didn’t use it. The boys didn’t want to stop, they had a good breakfast before we went in and then we got food after we left the park.
We had a great day and will definitely be returning again.
I didn’t take my phone in because I wanted to enjoy it with the boys, not worry about it getting damaged or taking photos, so the photos within this post of Aquascope are credited to Aquascope.
